Chancel & Sanctuary>

The chancel is separated from the nave by a simple stepped brick wall with coping stones. On the piers on either side of the chancel arch are the statues of St. Silas (left) and St. Paul (right). These were designed by Benjamin C. Boulter, a prominent member of Fr. Whittingham’s congregation.
Baldacchino designed by Ernest C. Shearman
Baldacchino designed by Ernest C. Shearman
The High Altar is of black marble and the gradine is of Siena marble. The six candlesticks on this altar were designed by Shearman (as was the crucifix now to be found in the confessional chapel). The large hanging crucifix, within the baldacchino, originally hung from the roof between chancel and nave. The baldacchino has at its centre, the Resurrection figure of Our Lord with the banner of victory in His hand. Below is the word “Resurrexit.” Below Christ are two angels swinging censers and two more attendant figures bearing incense boats. On pillars at each corner of the baldacchino are angels blowing trumpets. Above the figure of Our Lord is a dove, representing the Holy Spirit. Above are the letters in flames of red and gold, ‘D.O.M,’ (Deo Optimo Maximo) - ‘To the Most High God.’ This splendid baldacchino was a gift from Mrs Alice Mary Hunt to the church in 1914.
